2048 Strategy: How to Win With the Corner Method
The best 2048 strategy is to keep your biggest tile in one corner, build a chain of tiles next to it in falling order, and swipe mostly in the two directions that point at that corner. Never swipe the other way unless you have to. In our simulations, random swiping never reached 512, while the corner method with a little lookahead reached 2048 in about one game in three.
Key points
- One corner, always: your biggest tile lives there for the whole game.
- Build a snake chain: 1024, 512, 256, 128 along the bottom row, then back the other way on the row above.
- Two main swipes: for the bottom left corner, use down and left. Right is the backup. Up is the last resort.
- Our test: random swiping reached 512 in 0 of 1,000 games; the corner method with lookahead reached 1024 in 83% and 2048 in 33%.
- A 2048 tile built from 2s is worth 20,480 points, which is why a winning game scores around 20,000.

The one rule: keep your biggest tile in a corner
Pick a corner and never let your biggest tile leave it. The video uses the bottom left corner. The bottom row reads 64, 32, 16, 8, and there is another 8 right above the last tile.
- Down: the two 8s merge into 16. The row is now 64, 32, 16, 16.
- Left: the 16s merge into 32. The row is 64, 32, 32.
- Left: the 32s merge into 64. The row is 64, 64.
- Left: the 64s merge into 128, right in the corner.
Four swipes, four merges, and the chain merges worth 16 + 32 + 64 + 128 = 240 points. That cascade only works because every tile in the chain sits next to the tile that is double its size.
We simulated 2,300 games: does the corner method work?
We wrote a small simulator with the exact rules of our 2048 game (a new tile after every move, a 2 nine times out of ten, otherwise a 4) and let three players loose on it.
| How it plays | Games | Reached 512 | Reached 1024 | Reached 2048 | Avg score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Random swipes | 1,000 | 0% | 0% | 0% | 1,088 |
| Corner rule only: down, then left, then right, then up, without looking | 1,000 | 3.7% | 0% | 0% | 2,488 |
| Corner method + checking what each swipe does to the chain | 300 | 99.7% | 83% | 33% | 19,962 |
The lesson: the corner is necessary but not enough. Swiping in a fixed order without looking barely beats random play. The big jump comes from checking, before each swipe, whether it keeps the chain in order and leaves empty cells. You do not need to be a computer for that: look at the board for two seconds before you move.
Build a snake chain
Your chain should fall in size away from the corner and then turn, like a snake:
- Bottom row, left to right: 1024, 512, 256, 128.
- Row above, right to left: 64, 32, 16, 8.
New small tiles enter at the far end of the snake. When the smallest end merges, it grows into the size of its neighbor, and the merges roll back toward the corner just like in the video. Keep the bottom row full whenever you can: a full row cannot slide sideways, so left and right swipes never pull the big tile out of its corner.
Which way to swipe (and when to break the rule)
With the bottom left corner, swipe down and left most of the time. Right is your third choice; use it when down and left do nothing, ideally while the bottom row is full. Up is the move that ruins games: it can pull the big tile away and let a 2 slide into the corner, as the video warns.
Sometimes up is the only legal move. When that happens, swipe up and immediately swipe down again on the next move if you can, so the corner fills back with your big tile before a new 2 lands there.
2048 tips that save games
- Count empty cells. With three or fewer left, slow down and check all directions before each swipe.
- Clean up stray 2s and 4s before they get stuck between big tiles. A trapped small tile ends more games than anything else.
- Skip merges that break the chain. A merge in the middle of the board is worth nothing if it moves your second biggest tile out of line.
- Build the next tile before you need it. To turn 512 into 1024, you need a second 512 next to it, so start building 256s at the end of the chain early.
- Use Undo to learn. On NitroPlayer you can step back up to 200 moves in solo games. The undone move's points are lost and the undo counts as a move.
How the score works and how long a win takes
Every merge adds the new tile's value to your score. A tile built only from 2s is worth (n - 1) x its value, where n is the power of 2. For 2048, that is 10 x 2048 = 20,480 points. Spawned 4s skip one merge each, so a real winning game usually lands a bit under that.
New tiles add 2.2 to the board on average, so getting enough on the board for a 2048 tile takes at least about 930 moves. Our corner player averaged about 1,120 moves per game. Plan for a long game, not a sprint.
Strategy for 2048 duels
In a NitroPlayer duel both players start from the same board and get the same new tiles. The clock runs for 3 minutes: the higher score wins, or the first player to build 2048 wins at once. There is no Undo.
A 2048 tile needs at least about 930 swipes, more than most people can make well in 3 minutes, so the duel is usually a score race. Use the same corner method, but swipe faster in the early game, when mistakes are cheap, and slow down only when the board gets crowded. One broken corner costs more points than a few seconds of thinking.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a trick to winning 2048?
Yes: keep your biggest tile in one corner, build a chain from big to small next to it, and avoid swiping away from that corner. In our simulations this raised the 2048 rate from 0% with random swipes to about 33%.
Can you win 2048 every time?
No. New tiles appear in random empty cells, so some games get stuck no matter how well you play. Good play makes a win much more likely, and Undo in solo games lets you fix a bad swipe.
Which corner is best in 2048?
Any corner works equally well, because the board is symmetric. Pick one you find comfortable and use it every game, so the swipes become a habit.
What happens after you reach 2048 on NitroPlayer?
The win is saved the moment the 2048 tile appears. You can then press Keep going to play on for 4096 and a higher score, or start a new game.

Want to reach 2048? Follow this one simple rule.
Pick a corner, and keep your biggest tile there. Always.
Then build a chain next to it, from big to small.
Now watch. Down... left... left... left!
The whole chain rolls into the corner. One hundred twenty-eight!
And never swipe up. A small tile could slip into your corner and block it.
Now you try! And on NitroPlayer, you can play with your friends. Games are so much more fun together.
