Angle, power, whack! How far can Pip fly across the ice?

Polar Drive is golf for distance on a long frozen field. A cheerful polar bear swings the club, and the ball is Pip, a little puffin in aviator goggles who has always dreamed of flying. You choose the angle and the power; every shot starts where Pip stopped, and after five shots your total distance is your score.

The ice is full of animals. Some are on Pip's side: seals pop out of their ice holes and bump him up, whales spout him sky-high and albatrosses grab him in mid-air and carry him forward. Others are not: a walrus swats him straight back and an ice tower stops him dead. The layout changes every round, so no two rounds are the same.

Rules, tips and FAQ

How to play Polar Drive

  1. Set the angle. A pointer sweeps up and down next to Pip. Tap the screen, click, or press Space to lock it.
  2. Set the power. The power bar fills and empties while the bear winds up. Tap again to lock it: hit the top for a PERFECT shot.
  3. Watch him fly. Pip flies, bounces and slides on his belly across the ice, and the animals he meets send him further or back.
  4. Five shots. Each shot starts where Pip stopped. Your final distance after five shots is your score.

The strip map at the bottom of the screen shows what is waiting further on, so you can plan the next shot. Your personal record is marked with a gold flag on the ice.

Tips for longer drives

  1. Read the map. A walrus ahead? Hit high and fly over it. A seal or a whale? Land close to it and it will launch Pip again.
  2. Aim for the birds. Albatrosses fly at different heights. A shot that passes near one gets a free ride of fifty metres or more.
  3. Whales always help. Land on a whale and it spouts, even between its regular spouts. Their jets send Pip higher than any shot.
  4. Full power is not always best. Sometimes a shorter shot that stops just before a walrus sets up a better next one.

Play solo, online or with a friend

Play on your own for the leaderboard, or start a duel: online against whoever is available, or with a friend through a private link. In a duel you both get exactly the same ice, with the same seals, whales, albatrosses and walruses, and the longer drive after five shots wins. Looking for more quick games? Try Snake, 2048 or Minesweeper.

Arctic Sports FAQ

Is Arctic Sports free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no download and no sign-up. A free account keeps your best distances across devices.

How far can you drive Pip?

Five good shots without help reach a few hundred metres. With seal bumps, whale spouts and albatross rides, drives of over 1,000 metres are possible.

Can I play it on my phone?

Yes. Tap the game and it opens full screen; turn the phone sideways for the widest view of the ice.

Is this like the old Flash games where you hit an animal as far as possible?

It is a new game inspired by those office classics: the same simple angle-and-power idea, with a friendly polar bear and Pip, a puffin who loves to fly. Nobody gets hurt on our ice.
