By the NitroPlayer team · Updated · 6 min read

The best letters to guess in Hangman are A and E first, then R, N, O and I: in our count of all 194 words in the NitroPlayer Hangman game, A appears in 58% of words, E in 56%, R in 49% and N and O in 45%. Start with those, then use the category and the word length to pick the letter that fits the most words still possible.

Key points

  • Top letters in our 194-word list: A 58%, E 56%, R 49%, N 45%, O 45%, I 43%, then L 41% and T 39%.
  • S is weaker than you think: only 26% of words have it, because the words are mostly single nouns, not plurals.
  • The category is your best clue. Countries are full of A, N and I; Science words are full of E, T and O.
  • 65% of the words repeat at least one letter, so one right guess often fills two or three blanks.
  • Solo games on NitroPlayer give you 8 wrong guesses and a free first hint. Duels give you 6 and no hints.

The best letters to guess in Hangman, counted

Generic letter-frequency charts are built from running text, full of words like "the" and "is". Hangman words are different: they are longer nouns. So we counted letters in the real thing. We took all 194 words in our Hangman game (six categories: Animals, Countries, Food, Sports, Science and Things) and checked how many words contain each letter at least once.

LetterWords that contain itLetterWords that contain it
A58%C28%
E56%S26%
R49%G25%
N45%M, U21%
O45%B, P20%
I43%D, H16%
L41%Y14%
T39%K, W, F, V11% to 6%

At the bottom: Z 3%, J and X 2%, Q 1%. Two surprises stand out. A beats E by a hair in this list, so either one is a great first guess. And S, often listed as a top consonant, is only tenth, because almost no word here is a plural.

The best first six guesses

We also tested a few popular opening orders. For each one, we guessed the same six letters on all 194 words and counted how many of them missed and how much of the word they revealed.

First six lettersMisses (average)Letters of the word revealed
A E R N O I3.049%
E A O T R N3.149%
E T A O I N3.148%
E A O I S T3.345%
A E I O U S3.542%

The lesson: mix the top vowels with R and N early. Opening with all five vowels plus S is the weakest plan we tested, because U appears in only 21% of the words. Every single word in the list has at least one vowel, and 85% have an A or an E, so A and E together find a hit in 85% of games.

How to win Hangman: use the category and the length

Fixed letter orders only take you so far. The real hangman strategy is to stop guessing "common letters" and start guessing letters that fit the words still possible. NitroPlayer shows the category and the number of letters on the clue line, and that changes everything.

The top letters by category:

  • Animals: E 63%, A and R 58%, O 50%.
  • Countries: A 76%, N 61%, I 55%. Six end in -IA and six in -LAND.
  • Food: A 59%, E 53%, O and R 50%.
  • Sports: N 61%, I 54%, G 46%. Ten of the 28 end in -ING and five contain BALL.
  • Science: E 71%, T 61%, O 57%.
  • Things: A and E 57%, O and R 50%.

How much is that clue worth? We ran a computer test that, at each step, guessed the letter found in the most words still possible. Using the category, the length and the revealed letters, it never needed more than 2 wrong guesses on any of the 194 words, and solved 135 of them with no misses at all. Ignoring the category and using only the length, its worst case grew to 4 misses. You will not remember the whole list, but the habit is the same: picture the words that fit, then guess the letter most of them share.

Worked example: PANTHER in one miss

This is the game from the video. The clue line says Animals, 7 letters.

  1. E: hit, _ _ _ _ _ E _. In our list only three 7-letter animals fit: PANTHER, HAMSTER and LOBSTER.
  2. A: hit, _ A _ _ _ E _. That rules out LOBSTER.
  3. O: miss. That is fine, it cost one of your wrong guesses and told you something.
  4. T: hit, _ A _ T _ E _. Only PANTHER is left.
  5. R and N: both hit, _ A N T _ E R. The word almost spells itself.
  6. P and H finish it. Solved with one miss.

The video says you get six wrong guesses. That is the classic rule and the duel rule on NitroPlayer. In solo games you now get eight: the figure gets two eyes after the two legs.

More hangman tips

  • Expect repeated letters. 127 of the 194 words (65%) repeat a letter, like GIRAFFE, BROCCOLI or BASKETBALL. A hit on a common letter often fills two blanks.
  • Think in endings. -ING, -BALL, -IA, -LAND, -ER and -ON cover a lot of words. Once two letters of an ending show, test the rest of it.
  • Save rare letters for the end. Z, J, X and Q are in 3% of words or fewer. Guess them only when the pattern asks for them, like ZEBRA or JAGUAR.
  • Use the free hint early. In solo play the first hint costs nothing. Later hints cost a life and are blocked on your last life. A revealed letter tells you the most while many blanks are still open.
  • Do not rush. The score gives 100 points for every wrong guess you have left, 20 for every different letter in the word, and loses only 1 point per 2 seconds. A careful guess is worth far more than a fast one.

Hangman duels: six misses, no hints

In a duel both players get the same word and category, with up to 3 minutes on the clock. You have 6 wrong guesses and no hints. Solving beats not solving; if both of you solve, fewer misses wins, and equal misses go to the faster player.

That makes the opening matter even more. Start with A or E, add R and N, and lean hard on the category before you spend a guess on anything rare. You can play a duel online with whoever is available, or send a private link to a friend. It is free, with no download and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first letter to guess in Hangman?

A or E. In the 194 words of the NitroPlayer Hangman game, A appears in 58% of words and E in 56%, more than any other letter. R is the best consonant at 49%.

Should I guess all the vowels first in Hangman?

No. A, E, O and I are strong, but U appears in only 21% of the words. Mixing A, E, O and I with R and N reveals more of the word for fewer misses than opening with A, E, I, O, U and S.

How many wrong guesses do you get in Hangman?

On NitroPlayer you get 8 wrong guesses in a solo game, and your first hint is free. In a duel you get the classic 6 and no hints.

Is Hangman just luck?

Mostly not. The category and the word length narrow the choices fast, and choosing the letter shared by the most words that still fit wins most games with few misses. Luck matters only when two words differ by a single rare letter.
