Word Search Tips: How to Find Words Faster

By the NitroPlayer team · Updated · 5 min read

To find words faster in a word search, look for the rarest letter in the word instead of its first letter, then check the straight lines through it. In our test on 3,000 NitroPlayer grids, a word's rarest letter appeared about 4.3 times per grid against 6.7 times for its first letter, so you check about a third fewer spots. Knowing which directions words can run cuts the search again.

The Word Search Trick: Find Words Faster (46 seconds, recorded in our free Word Search game). Read the transcript.

Key points

  • Anchor on the rarest letter (Z, Q, X, J, K, V, W) instead of the first letter: about a third fewer spots to check.
  • Solo grids on NitroPlayer read forwards only: left to right, top to bottom, or diagonally to the right. Duels use all 8 directions.
  • In our test, 84% of solo words ran straight across or straight down. Check those lines before diagonals.
  • Find long words first. They cover more of the grid and are easier to spot.
  • Score: 10 points per word plus a time bonus that starts at 600 and drops 1 point per second.

The rarest letter trick, measured

Most people scan for a word's first letter. The problem: common letters are everywhere. We generated 3,000 solo grids with the same code the Word Search game uses (12 by 12 letters, 10 words each) and counted how often each letter shows up.

LetterCopies per grid (average)
E9.7
A8.7
R8.3
O7.9
K, M, W4.5
V3.8
J3.7
Z, X, Q3.5 to 3.6

Then, for every hidden word, we compared two anchors. The word's first letter appeared on its grid 6.7 times on average. The word's rarest letter appeared only 4.3 times. That is about 35% fewer places to look before you find the right one.

One honest note: the empty cells are filled with random letters, so even a Z is rarely alone. In our test the rarest letter was the only copy on the board just 2% of the time. Expect three or four candidates, not one.

Which directions words run on NitroPlayer

Knowing where words can go is half the search. On NitroPlayer, solo grids (including the daily word search) place every word forwards. Here is where the words landed in our 3,000 solo grids:

DirectionSolo gridsDuels
Left to right42.6%about 18%
Top to bottom41.8%about 18%
Diagonal, down and to the right7.7%about 7%
Diagonal, up and to the right7.9%about 7%
Backwards (right to left, bottom to top, or a diagonal to the left)noneabout 50% in total

So in solo play, once you find a word's first letter, you only need to check four lines from it: right, down, down-right and up-right. In a duel all eight directions are used, so check every line through your anchor letter, in both directions.

How to find words in a word search, step by step

  1. Read the theme and the list. The category sits above the grid and the 10 words below it.
  2. Pick a word with an odd letter. ZEBRA, KIWI, JUDO, QUASAR and SAXOPHONE all have a letter that shows up only about four times or fewer.
  3. Sweep the grid row by row for that letter. Do not try to read whole words. Your eyes are looking for one shape.
  4. At each copy, test the neighbors. Look for the letter that comes right before or after it in the word.
  5. Follow the line and drag. Press on the first or last letter and drag to the other end. A selection from either end counts.
  6. Move to the next word. Found letters stay highlighted, and they can belong to a second word, so do not skip them.

Worked example: ZEBRA, KOALA and TIGER

This is the board from the video, an Animals grid with ten words.

  • ZEBRA: instead of looking for the whole word, look for the Z. On this board there is only one Z, so the word is found in a second.
  • KOALA: the K is the rare letter here. From the K, KOALA reads backwards, right to left.
  • TIGER: it runs diagonally, from the bottom left up to the right.

The video simplifies two things. Its board was built by hand so that Z and K each appear only once; on a real grid, random filler letters usually add two or three extra copies. And the backwards KOALA is how words can run in a duel. In a solo game today, every word reads forwards, like the diagonal TIGER.

More word search strategy for a faster time

  • Long words first. The longest words are placed first and stretch across most of the grid. ELEPHANT or WATERFALL is easier to catch than RED or OWL.
  • Look for double letters. The ZZ in PIZZA or the LL in FOOTBALL stands out among single letters.
  • Use letter pairs. Odd pairs like PH, WH or SQ are easier to spot than one common letter.
  • Leave short words for last. Short words fit almost anywhere. Hunt their rarest pair, like JU in JUDO.
  • Check diagonals on purpose. In solo grids they are only about 16% of words, so they are the ones you miss when you only scan across and down.

Speed matters for your score. Each word is worth 10 points, and finishing adds a time bonus of 600 points minus one point for every second on the clock. The leaderboard and the daily word search are ranked by time.

Word search duels: all 8 directions

In a duel you and your opponent race on the same grid and the same 10 words. The first to find all 10 wins; if nobody finishes in 5 minutes, the player with more words wins. Duel grids use all eight directions, so backwards words come back. Anchor on the rarest letter and check every line through it in both directions. Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to solve a word search?

Look for each word's rarest letter instead of its first letter, then test the lines through it. In our test on 3,000 grids, the rarest letter had about 4.3 copies per grid against 6.7 for the first letter, so there are fewer spots to check.

Can words go backwards in a word search?

In many puzzles, yes. On NitroPlayer, solo and daily grids place words forwards only: left to right, top to bottom or diagonally to the right. Duels use all eight directions, including backwards.

Should I look for the first letter of a word?

Only if it is a rare letter. Common first letters like E, A or R appear eight to ten times on a 12 by 12 grid. A rare letter such as Z, J or X appears three or four times, so it leads you to the word faster.

How many words are in each NitroPlayer word search?

Ten, chosen at random from one of 15 themes with 15 words each. Every listed word is always placed in the grid, so every puzzle can be finished.

Want to find words faster in Word Search? Try this trick.

Don't look for the whole word. Look for its rarest letter.

Like the Z in ZEBRA. There's only one Z on the board. Found it!

Words hide backwards and diagonally, too. KOALA starts at the K, and reads backwards.

Your turn: can you spot TIGER before I do? Three, two, one... there it is!

Now you try! And on NitroPlayer, you can play with your friends. Games are so much more fun together.
