Tetris Strategy: How to Get a Tetris Every Time
The best Tetris strategy is to keep your stack flat with no holes, leave one column open at the side, and drop the long I piece into that column to clear four lines at once, which is called a Tetris. On NitroPlayer a Tetris scores 800 x your level, double the 400 x level you get for four single lines.
Key points
- Flat stack, no holes: a level surface accepts almost any piece, and a covered hole cannot be filled until every row above it is gone.
- One open column: fill the other nine columns and keep one edge column empty for the I piece.
- The math: 4 lines at once = 800 x level, two doubles = 600 x level, four singles = 400 x level.
- Pieces are random on NitroPlayer, with no 7-bag: about 1 time in 5 you see no I piece for 10 pieces in a row.
- Know when to bail out: past the middle of the well, take single and double clears and rebuild.

How to get a Tetris: the 3-step setup
This is the same plan the video shows. For the clip we set up a low stack in advance: three full rows across the left nine columns, half of a fourth row, and the right column empty.
- Keep the stack flat. Two O pieces and an L go in flat on top of the stack, with no gaps under them. No holes, no towers.
- Leave one column open on the side. The rightmost column stays empty all the way down. Nothing goes in there except an I piece.
- Wait for the long piece. Watch the Next box. When the I piece comes, rotate it upright, slide it to the open column and hard drop it. Four rows vanish at once: that is a Tetris.
Four rows of nine filled cells is 36 squares, exactly nine pieces' worth. Add the I piece and a Tetris takes 10 pieces to build, the same 40 squares as four single clears, for twice the points.
Tetris scoring: why four lines at once pays double
On NitroPlayer, points for a clear are multiplied by the level you are on when you make it. Here is what the same four rows are worth, depending on how you clear them:
| How you clear 4 rows | Points on level 1 | Points on level 5 | Points on level 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four singles (4 x 100) | 400 | 2,000 | 4,000 |
| Two doubles (2 x 300) | 600 | 3,000 | 6,000 |
| Triple + single (500 + 100) | 600 | 3,000 | 6,000 |
| One Tetris (800) | 800 | 4,000 | 8,000 |
Hard drops add 2 points for every row the piece falls, so slamming a piece down once it is lined up is free score. Soft drops add nothing.
How long you may wait for the I piece
Many modern versions deal pieces from a shuffled bag of seven, so an I piece is never far away. NitroPlayer keeps it classic: each new piece is picked at random from the seven shapes, and there is no hold slot. On average an I piece comes once every 7 pieces, but droughts happen. We calculated the chance of seeing no I piece at all in the next run of pieces:
| Next pieces | Chance of no I piece |
|---|---|
| 5 | 46% |
| 10 | 21% |
| 15 | 10% |
| 20 | 4.6% |
| 30 | 1% |
The lesson: build for a Tetris, but expect a 15-piece wait about once in every ten tries. That is why the stack must stay low enough to survive the wait.
Tetris tips for a flat, clean stack
- Use the ghost piece. The faint outline shows exactly where the piece will land. Line it up, then hard drop.
- Plan with the Next box. Before placing the current piece, decide where the next one will go.
- Lay S and Z flat on matching steps. Standing them up is the most common way to leave a hole.
- Keep steps no taller than one or two cells. A deep one-wide pit only fits an I piece, and you already have a column waiting for that.
- Know the rotation. Pieces turn one way only, clockwise with the Up arrow or a tap on a phone. If a wall is in the way, the piece slides one cell sideways when that gives it room.
- Never cover the open column with anything but an I piece unless you are in danger.
When to stop waiting and bail out
Speed rises every 10 lines. These are the real drop intervals in the NitroPlayer game, one row down per interval:
| Level | Drop interval |
|---|---|
| 1 | 730 ms |
| 3 | 590 ms |
| 5 | 450 ms |
| 8 | 240 ms |
| 10 and up | 100 ms (top speed) |
At level 10 and beyond you have little time to fix a mistake. A good rule: if the stack passes the middle of the 20-row well, stop waiting for the I piece. Drop a piece in the open column, take singles and doubles until the stack is low again, then rebuild. A game over scores nothing more, so survival beats one greedy clear.
Strategy for a Tetris battle
In a 3-minute battle on NitroPlayer, both players get the same piece order, and clears send gray garbage rows to the other well: a double sends 1, a triple 2 and four lines 4. Singles send nothing.
- A Tetris is the best attack. Four rows sent for one piece, against one row for a double.
- Keep your stack lower than in solo play. Incoming garbage pushes everything up, and each garbage row has one hole you must clear through.
- If both players are alive at the buzzer, the higher score wins, so the level multiplier still matters.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Tetris in Tetris?
A Tetris is clearing four lines at once with a single I piece. It is the biggest clear in the game: on NitroPlayer it scores 800 points times your level, double the 400 times level you get for four single lines.
What is the best Tetris strategy for beginners?
Keep the stack flat, avoid holes, and leave one column open at the edge for the I piece. Use the ghost piece to see where each piece lands and look at the Next box before every placement. Level 1 drops slowly, so it is the right place to practice.
Is there a hold piece on NitroPlayer?
No. There is no hold slot and pieces are picked at random from the seven shapes, so you plan with the Next box and the ghost piece instead. Random pieces mean you can sometimes wait 15 or more pieces for an I piece.
Should I leave the open column on the left or the right?
Either works. Pick one side and use it every game so placing the I piece becomes automatic. Pieces appear near the middle of the well, so the walk to either edge is about the same.
